To enter data for sows and/or boars, select the “Data entry” navigation button. In the navigation window, click on “Individual animal data.”
When entering data, first select the event you want to enter. The fields that have been set will then become visible. By default, all fields are displayed. If there are fields that you do not want to enter, that you want to repeat, or that should have a default value, click on “Properties" For more information, see: Input properties
Notes:
1. When entering the ID (plastic number for sows or boar name for boars), you can use the previous and next shortcut keys if the entry is made via work lists printed from the program. The animals are then processed in the order in which they appear on the list. See also: Working lists 2. When a field is focused, its content is automatically selected. By pressing the ⬆ or ⬇ keys on a date field, you can select the previous or next day.
3. Both the plastic number and the tattoo number can be entered in the ID field.
4. We recommend entering data using keyboard shortcuts. To set up keyboard shortcuts, see: Keyboard shortcuts
The Events:
Arrival | Registration of the arrival at the farm of a rearing animal, sow, or boar. Individual piglets can only be “‘arrived’” by registering them at birth. | Removal | Registration of the removal of an individual piglet, rearing animal, sow, or boar from the farm. Four types of removals are supported: Type | Description | To slaughterhouse | The animal was sold for slaughter. | Death | The animal has died. | Euthanasia | The animal was euthanized due to illness or injury. | Sold | The animal has been sold or transferred to another company for production purposes. |
| Mating | Registration of coverage. An entry must be made for each type of mating, i.e. for both the mating and any re mating(s) that may follow. The program itself determines whether the entry is for a first mating, a re-mating, or a mating that follows. There is no limit to the number of matings and re-matings. | Heat no service | Recording the sow's readiness to breed | Skip heat | Recording the sow's readiness for insemination when insemination is deliberately skipped or postponed. | Preg exam | Registration of the results of a pregnancy test. There are 4 possible choices: Type | Description | Not tested | The animal has not been tested. | Pregnant | The animal has been tested for pregnancy. | Not pregnant | The animal has been tested and found not to be pregnant. | Doubtful | The result of the test cannot be determined. | Supposed pregnant | The result of the test is difficult to determine, but probably positive. |
| Abortion | Registration of sow rejection. The cycle is closed and no piglets can be added. | Farrowing | Recording a sow's litter. | Foster | Registration of the transfer of all or part of the piglets from or to another sow. Note: At the time of weaning the sow, Pig Expert calculates the number of piglets moved using the formula moved = live born - weaned - dead. The number of piglets entered as moved does not have to correspond to the calculated number of piglets moved at this point. Piglets entered as moved are not used in calculations. | Weaning | Registration of piglet weaning or sow weaning. In Pig Expert, it is possible to wean a litter of piglets in several times. If both the sow and the piglets are weaned, a check mark is placed in the “Sow weaned” field. When weaning, it is possible to report the piglets that have died and the possible causes of death. When entering the causes of death, please note that the ‘Died’ column must be unchecked (not visible on the input screen). For the number of weaned piglets, you can enter how many piglets have been weaned and how many piglets have died, along with the causes of death.
If only the total number of piglets that have died is recorded, the ‘Died’ column must be visible and filled in. Note: The total number of piglets that have died must be entered in this column! This can also be specified by pressing the space bar. | Mortality till weaning | Registration of piglets that die before weaning. Note: The total number of piglets that died before weaning is entered when the sow is weaned. The entry under the event “Mortality before weaning” is used exclusively for analyzing piglet mortality. | Piglet defect | Registration of defects in piglets. | Treatment | Registration of the treatment of an individual animal. The medication used for treatment must first be created under “Codes” --> “Treatments.” For more information, see: Create/change codes | Semen collection | Recording bear jumps. This event is only used when using company AI. | Sperm analyse | Recording the quality of the collected semen. This event is only used when commercial AI is employed. | Location | Registration of the transfer of an individualized animal to a stable section and/or pen. | Change production phase | Registration of a change in animal category. For example, from rearing animal to ‘in production’. This indicates that an animal had a certain status on the farm and that this has now changed. | Weigh | Recording the weight of an individual animal. | Backfat measurement | Recording of various backfat thickness measurements of an individual animal. An average backfat thickness can also be indicated based on the various measurements. | Animal score | Here, a self-selected score can be assigned to an individual animal. The score type must first be created under “Codes” --> “Animal score type.” See: Create/change codes | Out of production | With this entry, it is possible to remove a sow from production, meaning that the animal is no longer counted in the animal count as a sow. | Animal remark | It is possible to enter a previously created comment for an individual animal, separate from another event. The comment must first be created under “Codes” --> “Animal remark.” See: Create/change codes | Assign ID | This input option allows you to change the animal ID. This can be the plastic number, tattoo number, or transponder number. |
